Delaware Bay

چکیده
Estuary Ecosystem, the second largest estuary in North America and home to hundreds of species of ecological, commercial, and recreational value. Unlike other estuaries in the Mid-Atlantic, the Delaware estuary’s tide range is greater than the ocean tide range, generally about 2 meters. Beaches account for 52 percent of the bay’s shore, with marsh and eroding peat accounting for most of the remainder.

متن کاملDistribution of cytochrome P4501A1-inducing chemicals in sediments of the Delaware River-Bay system, USA.
The Delaware River-Bay system, USA, was the subject of a study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that involved chemical and biological analyses, including the use of the biomarker P450 human reporter gene system (HRGS) to document the occurrence and distribution of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A1-inducing compounds. Sediment extracts from 81 locations along the Delaware River, De...
متن کاملCoincident ruddy turnstone migration and horseshoe crab spawning creates an ecological 'hot spot' for influenza viruses.
Since 1985, avian influenza virus surveillance has been conducted annually from mid-May to early June in charadriiform species from the families Scolopacidae and Laridae (shorebirds and gulls) at Delaware Bay in the northeast United States. The mass migrations of shorebirds, gulls and horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) coincide at that time, and large numbers of migrating birds pause at Delaw...
متن کاملModeling the Dispersal of Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea virginica) larvae in Delaware Bay
The interactions of circulation and growth processes in determining the horizontal distribution of eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) larvae in the Delaware Bay estuary were investigated with a coupled circulation-individual-based larvae model that used environmental conditions from the spawning seasons (mid-June to mid-September) of 1984, 1985, 1986, 2000, and 2001. Particles, representing...
متن کاملSeasonal Levels of the Vibrio Predator Bacteriovorax in Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf Coast Seawater
Bacteriovorax were quantified in US Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific seawater to determine baseline levels of these predatory bacteria and possible seasonal fluctuations in levels. Surface seawater was analyzed monthly for 1 year from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; the Gulf Coast of Alabama; and four sites along the Delaware Bay. Screening for Bacteriovorax was performed on lawns of V. parahaemolyticus host c...
متن کاملRemote Sensing of Ocean Salinity: Results from the Delaware Coastal Current Experiment
A comparison is presented of remote and shipboard measurements of sea surface salinity made in the vicinity of the Delaware coastal current, a low salinity band with its source in the mouth of Delaware Bay. The remote sensing measurements were made from an aircraft with the Electronically Scanned Thinned Array Radiometer. The shipboard measurements were made with a thermosalinograph on board th...
